What you need to consider when founding a business as a sideline

Can I start my own business as a sideline?

Many founders become self-employed as a sideline activity. In most cases, this is possible without any problems, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

3 rules to follow if you want to become self-employed on the side

  1. As a general rule, you are allowed to have a part-time job outside the working hours of your main job (unless your employment contract explicitly prohibits this).

  2. It is your responsibility to ensure that your secondary job does not negatively impact your performance in your primary job. That would violate your duty to act in the best interests of your employer.

  3. Equally, your secondary job is not allowed to compete with your primary job (that would also be a breach of your duty towards your employer).

What can happen if I break these 3 rules?

If you violate these rules, you may be dismissed without notice or even sued for damages.

What do I have to do to become self-employed on the side?

Have an open conversation with your employer. Disclose your plans and tell them about your motivation. Refusal is only possible on the basis of the above-mentioned points.
